The results are in: the new kid is playing with the big boys!

According to comScore's report for social networks in Indonesia, Koprol is 7th in unique users, and 3rd in pageviews. Yes, we now have more pageviews than Multiply (#4) & Friendster (#5), and only next to Facebook (#1) & Twitter (#2).

Yesterday morning, Koprol reached 1 million active users. We celebrated it with a cake!  (Thanks, akallus!)

We tracked down our one-millionth user and he is diditdomba, a junior high school student in Depok. We invited him to meet the founders, our country manager (Pontus) and receive cool Yahoo! merchandise. Oh, and a sweet reward of one million Rupiah.

Didit, said “I was very happy because I had just signed up for Koprol just a few hours before the Yahoo! Koprol team called me and informed me that I was the winner. I feel like I got an early present for my birthday next November 14. Suddenly, I have a lot of friends on my Koprol account. It is fun, totally fun, to become so popular.”

We hope many more people will use Koprol and we can't wait to find out who will be our two millionth user.

Thank you, Indonesia! Koprol is experiencing amazing growth. 106,750 new users in a 7 day span, and daily signups are still increasing.

This growth is caused by our huge campaign all over Indonesia, that includes the Pintu Ungu online campaign 2 weeks ago, and the Yahoo! Koprol ad on major television stations since last week. And we're not done yet.

Expect more growth from a new Nexian phone campaign that was just officially announced today on a full page ad on Kompas. Yup, Nexian launched NX-G821 that includes a custom Koprol app and a free CD from Nidji!

Four times more active

Signups are great, but even better is activity. People are not just signing up on Koprol, but also using it a lot! We got so many active users on Koprol that some of you may experience slowness yesterday (Wednesday).

Yes, we went over capacity. Sorry!

Fortunately it's OK now. Our devteam worked overtime and did some magic to improve the codes and restore stability. We will soon get more servers too

The good news is the server upgrade we did last midnight was completed.

The bad news is we found a couple of bugs that's quite bad. One is an error in the message queue which affects those who crosspost to Twitter. Posts from days ago just appeared on their timeline.

Second, there is an error in the direct messages. There are several reports that users can see direct messages between other people. This is a big flaw and we apologize for the inconvenience and damage it may cause. We take direct messages very seriously and have been fixing it all morning and will make sure it doesn't happen again. Sorry, and please stay with us because we have much better news ahead.

Update 11.09: To ensure this bug is fixed, we might need to lose private messages sent this morning (around 4am to 6am). So sorry. We hope to get this fixed and Koprol up soon.

Update 11.58: Fixed!

If last month was about new features, this month is about improving performance. Many of you got excited with new stuff but felt the site getting slower as we get hundreds of new users every week. To cope with our own growth, we had to do some speed optimization.

1. Stronger Hardware

With features being added and users increasing by 18% last month, we simply need stronger server performance. And so we added lots of memory to our first server, and currently preparing to install a second server (much stronger) to our arsenal.

2. Smarter Code

To prepare Koprol for upcoming features, we look back at our original code and see where we can optimize it. We're happy to find tweaks that lightened the server's load and drastically improved speed. You can't see it but it's about the pagination, the AJAX page load, calculations of nearby people, and other backend stuff.

3. Lighter Pages

During this beta phase, we don't just add features. We take out things too. This time, we reduced the stream to show less posts and reviews. So you will see faster first load while ensured of faster response when you click to see more.

We Ain't Done Yet

Now that we have improved performance, we can go back to working on the next features which will turn this location-based network into a social cityguide. Then you'll see what Koprol is all about.

We've been hit by, we've been struck by, a hardware problem

Koprol is down since around 2 a.m. this morning. Our team is working hard to solve it. By the looks of it, we may need one day to get back up again. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you'll come back to Koprol again.

We've fixed the problem and will restore our server to the data center as soon as possible. Koprol should be back up at 7pm the latest.
